Real Women Share Why They Do (Or Don’t) Talk About Botox

Source: cotton bro | Pexels

You may text your friends about everything from Bumble dates to birth control, but do you spill the details of your Botox or filler treatments to your group chat, too? And what about when it comes to those who share their lives on Instagram—do influencers have a responsibility to talk about getting Botox with their followers? While Botox may have been seen as less of a commonplace procedure in decades past, it’s now frequently mentioned in the media and is administered everywhere from dentists’ offices to medical spas. In fact, recent findings from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reveal that Botox was the most common type of minimally invasive cosmetic procedure performed in 2020.

Curious to get the scoop on who is sharing the details of their treatments with whom, I spoke with six women about their decision to openly speak about Botox and what led them to this point.

On setting realistic standards…

Anna Page, a 28-year-old full-time influencer in New York City, is happy to share with her 114,000 followers that she does indeed receive Botox treatments. “I wanted to be open about getting Botox because growing up, it was a very taboo subject, and not for any good reason,” Page reflected. “I think being open about it sets a very realistic beauty standard and lets people know they’re not alone in having the desire to get Botox or fillers.” Page hopes that others with substantial Instagram audiences can be equally transparent. “I wish people with platforms would be more open about what they have had done so it’s not as mysterious or scary for people who aren’t as experienced but would like to have it,” she said.

On demystifying the process…

New York City influencer Hattie Kolp, 29, also posts about her experience with Botox on her social media channels. “I want other women, young and old, to know it’s an option, and if it’s something they’re curious about, wanting to do, or already doing, I want them to feel comfortable asking me questions about my experience or just talking to me about it,” she shared. “As with anything we do with our bodies, it’s a very personal choice, and I think it’s so important to talk about all things health and beauty to bounce ideas off each other.”

On rethinking beauty standards…

Washington, D.C. resident Kelly McCoyd started getting Botox at the age of 29 and was sold on the treatment from the get-go—but she held back on singing its praises from the rooftops for some time. “I remember initially wanting to keep it a secret to avoid judgment,” the 34-year-old reflected. “But as I’ve gotten older—and likely overall more confident and self-assured—I realized by keeping it a secret, I was only further contributing to the close-mouthed culture and unrealistic beauty standards women place on themselves.” McCoyd, who maintains a fashion and lifestyle Instagram account, has posted about her treatments on her page. “Of course, some might say by participating in cosmetic procedures, I’m further fueling the unrealistic standards,” she said. “But I think by being honest, I’m able to shed some light on how much time and money I’ve spent to get my skin where it is today.”

On destigmatizing beauty treatments…

When she met her now-husband in 2017, 43-year-old Alexandra Gilbert had already been getting Botox treatments for three years. However, it wasn’t until last summer that she told him about this habit. “I had grown up in a culture where I had learned you don’t share beauty ‘secrets’ with your partner,” the Austin, Texas resident noted. “I don’t think I’ve shared with my family,” she added. “I think that has to do with also growing up with the message that we shouldn’t spend a lot on our appearances and that we should age gracefully.” Now, as the stepmother to a 19-year-old, Gilbert looks back on her own young adulthood in wonder. “I grew up in a culture and time where so much of what happens with a woman’s body had to be kept a secret—our periods, wearing a bra, and even deodorant!”

On redefining what results look like…

After being pleasantly surprised with her Botox experience, 26-year-old Chicago resident Jorian Lenik said she “all but sent out a mass text to all my contacts about how excited I was.” She added, “I think there’s this idea of Botox, and it’s super outdated and stereotypical, and if I can open someone’s mind to seeing it differently, that’d be cool.” Lenik was thrilled that Botox could help with her jaw clenching without resulting in an unnatural, frozen appearance. “My best friend, mom, and grandma were genuinely shocked about my experience and how ‘normal’ of a thing it was to do,” she said. “They truly thought Botox was just for rich, bored housewives, and I thought it would be cool to educate them about the fun medical upsides Botox has.”

On developing confidence…

Meg, a 32-year-old living in Fairfield, Connecticut, also withheld the details of her treatment from her partner for some time. “I discuss using Botox with my girlfriends, but I initially avoided telling my boyfriend in fear of coming off as vain or wanting to augment my appearance,” she said.

Like Jorian, Meg noted that despite Botox’s prevalence, it still comes with its share of preconceived notions. “When it comes to Botox, my experience is that a lot of people don’t understand the difference between Botox and fillers. Both are often affiliated with celebrity examples of extreme use, so there is definitely a stigma of Botox that I try to avoid,” she commented. “After time, I have felt more confident in the subtlety of getting Botox injections and have widened the pool of who I discuss with.”

Final Thoughts

In a world of Instagram filters and heavily edited selfies, talking about procedures and tweaks to the face can still be seen as taboo. But while some of the women we spoke with shared an initial fear of coming off as vain or too beauty-focused should they reveal their Botox habits, these feelings slowly—but surely—dissipated over time.

Abercrombie’s Faux Leather Pants Are a Must Buy

The Everygirl’s product selections are curated by the editorial team. If you buy something through our links, we may earn an affiliate commission, at no cost to you. We only recommend products we genuinely love.

Historically, at least a few trends every year are shocking in nature. Did I think I’d wake up one day in fall 2021 and realize I have a full stack of sweater vests in my closet that I rotate through every week? No, but that’s where the year has brought me. Another thing that feels shocking? That regular folk are now wearing leather pants on a regular Tuesday afternoon.

No longer a back-of-the-closet item that’s reserved for last-minute Sandy from Grease Halloween costumes, faux leather has been spotted on everything over the past year, and pants are at the top of that list.

The thing about them is that unlike jackets or tops, there’s a lot of room for error in a faux-leather pant. You buy the wrong pair, and you’ll be squeaking down the street, constricted and uncomfortable every time you brave leaving the house in the them; it’s something that has (very unfortunately) happened to me many times—until now.

Abercrombie has been consistently stepping up their game for the past couple of years, and I’ve found myself reaching for their pieces in my closet constantly. I truly have not been disappointed by a single item I’ve gotten from them as of late, so when I saw that they had a version of their famous ’90s high rise jeans in faux leather, I immediately ordered them.

Abercrombie’s jeans are some of my all-time favorites, and a big part of that is because of their fit. I am generally a size 27 in pants, but a lot of straight-leg pairs haven’t quite fit right because I have some muscular thighs to account for. I’ve found that their Curve Love line is my absolute ideal fit of pants, as they have an extra two inches of material through the hip and thigh. Those two inches have made a world of difference for me and have given me some of the best-fitting pants I have ever found (and, honestly, ones I’d pay much more for given how high-quality they are).

When I slid these pants out of the package, I knew they were a hit right away. Unlike many faux-leather materials, they felt buttery soft and lightweight, and when I put them on, I genuinely did not want to take them off. The other faux-leather pants I own are a nightmare because the inside is almost a fleece-like material, which makes my legs hot, sweaty, and stuck—not ideal. These were both flexible and breathable, which made them feel more comfortable than even my favorite jeans.

The fit of these is absolutely true to size. They also come in their standard jean fit, multiple colors, and a cropped and skinny version. I am absolutely in love with this deep, rich brown, especially with the creams and burgundies in my closet this time of year, but the black are a classic that I’m planning to pick up as well.

I’ve spent a lot of time (and far too much money) trying to find an inexpensive but high-quality pair of faux-leather pants, and my mission has finally come to a close. Don’t waste your time trying to find something better than these—as someone who has tried just about every brand of faux-leather pants on the market, these are the best bang for your buck.

The 21 Best Foundations for Mature Skin

The 21 Best Foundations for Mature Skin in 2021 That Don't Crease or Pill

Getty Images

Regardless of age, your perfect foundation is likely one that does a pretty great job camouflaging your unique skin concerns while giving you a flawless finish. However, there comes a time where you might want to enlist in one of the best foundations for mature skin the market has to offer. We're here to guide you on the best options that address things like fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven texture — you know, all naturally occurring things that happen when you live long enough to acquire infinite experience and wisdom.

As you grow older, your complexion gains texture, but that's nothing to fret about. You just need to know what you're dealing with when choosing what makeup products to buy. "Fine — or not so fine — lines and larger pores can make foundation look mask-like at best and incredibly unflattering at the worst," explains makeup artist Fiona Stiles. "Finding a [hydrating] foundation that melts into the skin is paramount for looking fresh. Anything too heavy will settle into lines and do the opposite of what you're looking for."

Makeup artist Tony Tulve recommends choosing liquid foundations, as they "act more like a second skin" and leaning into the "less is more" philosophy when it comes to application. (You'll see what we mean when you read through this list.)

Once you've landed on your dream formula, the key is to only dot foundation in the areas you need coverage the most, instead of slathering it on all over, which makeup artist Nick Barose says can read as "severe." Tulve suggests tapping the product in with your fingers, blending outwards as needed, and using minimal powder — as it can emphasize lines and texture, the very things you're probably trying to downplay.

Now that you've gotten the low-down, we present to you 21 of the best foundations for mature skin, hand-picked from experienced makeup artists. Most of these options are spiked with moisture-boosting ingredients that never result in cakey finishes and are ideal for enhancing the innate beauty of older skin.

How to Save Money When You’re Not a Saver

Until pretty recently, I would have classified myself as a saver. I had some money saved, so that meant I was a natural saver, right? But after a weekend trip with some friends who are saving pros, I realized that I’m actually not a great saver. They tracked deals, had zero interest in small impulse purchases while out, and knew their budget down to the nickel. I don’t track a budget and don’t have a running tally in my head of how much things cost or how much I’ve spent in a given week or month.

I’ve been mistakenly thinking that I’m a great saver, but what I realized is that I’ve learned how to save despite being a spender by nature. I save because over the years, I’ve set up a series of nudges to help me succeed. None of these nudges are huge actions or changes that leave me feeling deprived; they’re small, little routines that help me make the right decisions about how to spend and save my money. Below are the “nudges” that have worked for me, but use these examples to create your own ways to save money that make choosing to save easy and non-restrictive.

Use autopay to put money into saving and investments

You probably already know that you should pay yourself first, meaning you put away money into saving and investment accounts before paying for anything else. Sounds great in theory, right? But let’s say you just got a paycheck, and while you know that you should transfer $500 to savings, you’ve also got that vacation coming up and want to leave a little extra in your checking account just in case, so you’ll add $500 to your savings when you get back. Spoiler alert: This was consistently me, and I never made the transfer later.

To make sure money is actually going into your savings or investments, use autopay so you don’t have to make a decision. Set up an automatic transfer from your checking account to your savings as soon as your paycheck hits your account (and don’t forget to take advantage of any employer retirement plan contributions that you can make automatically as well). I haven’t missed a month of hitting my savings goal since setting it up automatically.

Create a barrier

One of the biggest factors that has helped me save money is that I keep my checking account at one bank and my savings account at another. This may seem like an incredibly small thing to do and maybe even seem inconvenient or unnecessary, but it has made a huge impact in keeping me from overspending. Having a barrier between my two accounts and two different “types” of money (one for my present self and one for my future self) keeps my savings account out of sight and out of mind. It also keeps me from accessing the savings account funds too easily. If I want a little extra cash, it’s not easy to transfer it from savings to checking—it takes 2-3 days, and by that time, I’ve decided against taking from savings anyway.

Know your spending triggers

Self-awareness is always key, and getting to know what triggers you to spend is crucial to avoiding spending more than you’re comfortable with. Spending triggers can be people, situations, or stores (looking at you, Target) that make it difficult for you to stay within a budget. For example, my trigger was stress shopping after work. On my commute home I’d drive past a Nordstrom Rack, and after a long, stressful day, I’d find myself automatically pulling into the parking lot and roaming the aisles for 45 minutes looking for deals. Once I realized that stress was my spending trigger, I looked for ways to destress that didn’t involve my wallet. I changed my route home from work and found other, less expensive things to do to help me relieve stress. Once you know your spending triggers, you can identify how to fix them or avoid putting yourself in that situation.

Master the pause

This is not a tip just for your finances but can be applied to your whole life, and it’s just about being more mindful and intentional about every decision you make. I first got the idea to be more intentional from Marie Kondo. The idea to organize (and keep vs. donate) based off of what sparks joy really resonated with me: Why couldn’t the same principle be applied to personal finance as well? Now, before I’m about to buy anything (and I mean anything), I pause and ask myself, “Will this make me happier than [insert the other thing I’d like to buy or save for]?” Pausing and asking the question helps me reflect on whether or not I’m making a mindless purchase or if that $20 shirt from Target really does bring me joy. I’ve saved myself from a lot of mindless purchases that didn’t actually make me happier, and I saved my money for purchases that truly are worth it.

Set exciting goals

A trip to South Africa had been on my travel wish list for 10 years, but a trip across the globe was not going to be cheap. Having a goal that truly excited me taught me how to prioritize savings. I started saving money I didn’t even realize I was spending (like would I rather call an Uber or take the bus and put the money toward my trip?). Having a goal that excited me every time I thought about it made saving money so much easier than just thinking I should have savings or focusing on retirement alone. I viewed all of my purchases as tradeoffs, which taught me that not only can I save, but I can also be great at saving. If I had set an indiscriminate goal to just “save more,” there is no way I would have saved as much as I did.

Embrace technology

I’m a big fan of using technology to make everything in life easier: for transportation, to call a handyman, and to order food. So why not use an app to help me become more of a saver? There are plenty of apps that will help make saving easier, but don’t depend on them to do all the saving for you. I like to think of apps as the icing on the cake: I’ve already saved my automatic amount, but I layer on an additional routine to save change that I don’t notice in the moment but adds up in the long run. One of my favorite apps is Qapital for functions like rounding up each purchase to save the spare change, or setting weekly spending targets.

Increase by 1 percent

During a behavioral economics class in business school, I learned about routines that help prevent individuals from sabotaging their financial future. One routine that particularly stood out to me was auto-escalation, or an automatic option to systematically increase your retirement plan contributions by 1 percent each year. I took this concept to my personal life and started implementing my own auto-escalation. With the automatic transfer to savings that I set up for the beginning of each month, every few months, I would increase it by 1 percent. Spoiler: I didn’t even miss that money. Over the past few years of trying this technique, I’ve been able to double the amount saved each month without feeling like I’m missing any spending money.

Why Sea Moss Is a Buzzy Ingredient in Skin Care Right Now

ambercolored small bottle wit a dropper in it on an amber background that's a closeup of sea mossIllustration by Clara Hendler

All products featured on Allure are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Is it just us, or is sea moss absolutely everywhere? If you haven't come across a moisturizer infused with the stuff, you've probably seen fitness influencers tossing those mini tumbleweed-looking clumps into bowls of water, letting them soak until they turn into a gel, then adding that gel to a smoothie.

Regardless, the water-residing plant is super popular these days, and folks are touting its benefits (cures any and all inflammation! Boosts your immune system! Helps your skin retain moisture!), some of which seem almost too good to be true.

It's good, then, that we've got some professional pals who can tell us, from their expert standpoint, what sea moss is actually good for and how it really benefits our bodies — and how it doesn't. We spoke to dermatologists, a cosmetic chemist, and a nutritionist for the real rundown on how sea moss may (or may not) benefit your skin and overall health.

What is sea moss and what does it do for your skin?

It's important to note that sea moss, which is basically a variety of seaweed, goes by a few different names. "Sea moss, often called Irish moss, carrageen moss, or scientifically, Chondrus crispus, is a species of red algae," explains New York City-based board-certified dermatologist Anthony Rossi, Jr, M.D.. "It can be rich with vitamin A and vitamin E, which are both great antioxidants, as well as sulfur, which is also used in skin care for its ability to help with acne, rosacea, and for its antibacterial properties."

Sea Moss in Skin Care Products What Are the Benefits of Algae

Because it's packed with nutrients, sea moss has some potentially major benefits for your skin — it also creates a protective layer and keeps in moisture and whatever other good-for-you nutrients and ingredients you may have put on it.

"It forms a non-occlusive film on the skin that is biomimetic (similar) to naturally found proteins," explains cosmetic chemist Krupa Koestline. "Because of this characteristic, [sea moss] extract reinforces and stimulates keratinization of the epidermis."

In other words, it can protect your skin while giving it a protein boost, and remember — protein is essential to healthy skin.

One of the most notable benefits of sea moss as a skin-care ingredient is its ability to help your skin retain water. According to Koestline, those who use sea moss-based products may see improvements in the transepidermal water loss (TEWL) of their skin. TEWL refers to the water that passes from the dermis through your epidermis and evaporates into the air — you want as little of it as possible if you want your skin to be plump and hydrated.

Because many of sea moss's benefits likely come from its ability to form that film on the skin, Koestline says the ingredient is best used in a moisturizer, serum, or another leave-on application. "It wouldn't be as potent in a rinse-off product," she explains.

Adding skin-care products with enough sea moss extract in it may get you to see more hydrated-looking skin. Koestline notes, though, that there is still more independent research that needs to be done to confirm its benefits on the skin.

That said, keep in mind that it's not enough to have sea moss touted in your skin-care products. The specific formulation matters. "The caveat to any skin-care cure is how much of the active molecular component from a raw ingredient like sea moss will actually make its way into the final formula and how does that translate to penetration into the skin," says Dr. Rossi. "Dose, concentration, and formulation are all important parameters to determine whether a potential active will actually achieve clinical results."

Right now, there haven't been studies or recommendations of exact dose for sea moss, per Dr. Rossi, so it's still going to be a bit of trial and error. In the meantime, try our favorite sea moss-containing skin-care products: Alba Botanica Even Advanced Natural Moisturizer With Sea Moss SPF 15, and Tata Harper Crème Riche Peptide Night Cream.

What about eating sea moss?

Like many supplements, the jury is still out on whether it's better to ingest or apply sea moss topically, says Dr. Rossi, though he does note that eating sea moss is gaining popularity in American culture and has been used in many other cultures around the world for its purported health benefits.

Folks in Ireland have been known to eat dried sea moss in salad or boil it in warm milk, for example. This dates all the way back to at least the Irish potato famine in the 19th century. There's also a famous Jamaican Irish Moss Drink, also known as a love potion (possibly because some say it's an aphrodisiac), made with a blend of ingredients that include milk (vegan or dairy), nutmeg, and vanilla.

However, it is naturally packed with vitamins and antioxidants, plus nutrients like calcium and high levels of iodine. It's also been deemed safe to ingest, says Miami-based nutritionist Lon Ben-Asher. In fact, he notes, the iodine that sea moss is rich in is important for thyroid function. The seaweed could also help gut health, as well as muscle recovery and energy.

Image may contain Art Drawing Doodle and Plant

"Sea moss is a good source of protein, which is a macronutrient very important to muscle recovery. It is also high in mineral and electrolyte content which may help [replenish] what has been lost through perspiration during a workout," he says, adding that more research still needs to be done.

There have been some studies that suggest sea moss may benefit gut health. Ben-Asher says "since sea moss contains a significant source of carrageenan [a gelatin-like substance], there are some studies suggesting potential benefits in improving the diversity of gut microbiota since it may function as a prebiotic." However, every expert we asked would like to see more data when it's available.

Sea moss is a good source of iodine, which is a mineral that is crucial for proper thyroid function and regulating metabolism, explains to Ben-Asher. Though you should be mindful about your intake. "Too much consumption of iodine can have hormonal effects," warns Dr. Rossi. "Since Irish moss is rich in iodine, you may want to be cautious when it comes to overeating it." The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends that people consume no more than 225 micrograms of iodine daily, he says, so one-to-two servings, or two-to-four tablespoons, "is considered safe and healthy."

Whether you choose to ingest it or you prefer to slather it on your skin, sea moss is definitely a versatile ingredient. With the guidance of your doctor, you can definitely explore its benefits — and maybe, look and feel a little better afterward.

Source: Ashley Selleke

As much as we look forward to Halloween, we’ll admit it has a more-trick-than-treat way of sneaking up on us. October goes by in the blink of an eye, and when you’re caught up with picking apples, sipping pumpkin spice lattes, and checking off the rest of your fall bucket list, it’s easy to find yourself costume-less when the big day arrives.

The good news is, there are plenty of Halloween costumes you can pull directly from your closet, using items you already own. This is a great way to not only cover up your lack of preparation, but also save some cash. Plus, bonus sustainability points for re-using items you already own rather than purchasing something you’ll probably only wear once.

Whether you’re lacking time, budget or inspiration, we’ve got you covered. Keep reading for nine easy Halloween costume ideas you can pull directly from the depths of your wardrobe.

Bonus points if you can track down a small plush dog to throw in your tote or a pair of pink-shade sunglasses. To complete the look, put your hair half-up, half-down, and flick out the ends.

Hailey Bieber Has Another Ludicrously Luminous Skin Moment

selfie of hailey bieber with luminous skinInstagram/@haileybieber

Have you ever seen skin glow quite like it? That’s the question we’re all asking ourselves upon seeing Hailey Bieber's latest Instagram Story, in which the model is seen, face to the sun, with ludicrously luminous skin.

"Glossy skin and berry-stained lips all fall please," she captioned the post, showing off her own take on the trend. Here, we would argue on the contrary — skin that radiates health is not just for autumn, it's a year-round pursuit.

Having previously extolled the benefits of drinking water for healthy skin, Bieber is also a fan of under-eye masks and employs hardworking ingredients such as peptides and niacinamide, to keep her skin in good nick. She has also previously sung the praises of wearing an SPF year-round and paying as much attention to what you put in your body as you put on it: "Trying to keep that glow from the inside out," she said.

Meanwhile, lip stains are an excellent product to try in the cooler months, a time in which matte lipsticks can dry out the lips and gloss doesn't always marry well with windy days. Staying put through all manner of activities (including mask-wearing) a lip stain like Benefit’s Bene Tint Rose Tinted Lip & Cheek Stain intensifies lip color without overwhelming you with pigment.

Pairing her glossy skin with a sleek bun – à la Sarah Jessica Parker – and some simple gold hoops, Bieber is the epitome of model-off-duty beauty. Watch as we all attempt to recreate it.

10 Ways to Hygge Your Home and Make It More Inviting

Source: @kellyetz

As the seasons change, we’ve been hearing a lot of talk about Hygge (it’s pronounced “hoo-guh” BTW). If you haven’t heard of the Danish and Norwegian concept, it’s a way of life or feeling of coziness, connection with loved ones, and pleasure. It’s not a decor style or self-care practice but rather an overall feeling of comfort, wellness, and contentment. There are many ways to adopt and embrace this Danish way of living, especially as the weather gets colder and we’re all looking for more “cozy” in our lives. But one of the biggest pieces of hygge is how you make your home environment for optimal health and happiness. Take a few notes from the Danish and make your home cozier and more inviting with these 10 ways to bring hygge into your home.

1. Incorporate natural elements

There may not be a lot of green outdoors through the colder months, but that doesn’t stop the hygge-practitioners from bringing it inside to lighten and brighten their homes. Wood is another material that helps bring nature into our home for a cozier, happier feel. Wood floors, furniture, or decor can help us feel closer to nature, which is a very important part of the hygge concept. Bring more natural elements into your home, like textured pieces, lots of clay, unfinished wood, and fresh greenery.

2. Add more candles

Many people first think of candles when they think of hygge, and for good reason. The glow of candles creates the perfect atmosphere, lifting the spirits and casting warm light on a winter evening. Turning off artificial lights and opting for candles transforms any space into a cozier, more romantic, and more intimate oasis. Whether it’s during a night in alone or while entertaining close friends, there’s nothing more enticing than a room lit by candlelight. Read our complete guide to the best candles of the season to not only get more candlelight in your space but also to incorporate hygge-approved scents as well.

3. Let there be (more) light

Beyond just candles, natural light in general is a huge factor of hygge. Because the weather is cloudy and it gets dark earlier as the seasons change, the Danes take their lighting very seriously. A hygge home draws in as much natural light as possible. Think of candlelight as your go-to option for evenings, but incorporating more natural light in the home is your go-to during daylight hours. Keep curtains open and position mirrors on walls across from windows to double the natural light in your home. If your space has few windows or it gets really dark during colder months, be strategic about lamps. Choose light bulbs with a more orange tint instead of blue light, and position lamps near the coziest areas of your home (like near a favorite reading chair).

4. Put your favorite books on display

Taking a break with a good book is one of the mainstays of hygge, especially in fall and winter, when people are cooped up inside. Displaying all of your favorite classics or that stack you’ve been meaning to get to (you know the one) not only adds a cozy element to your home but will also inspire you to stay home and snuggle up with a good book. Try filling a shelf with gorgeous books or stack your favorites on coffee tables and side tables. Books have a special way of making a space feel more welcoming and lived-in (very hygge-appropriate).

5. Create “the nook”

Every hygge home needs that perfect place to curl up with a blanket and relax. In fact, there’s even a Danish word to explain this perfect little spot: hyggekrog, or a cozy corner. Think of it as your safe space where you can be at peace, read a book, and have a cup of tea or hot cocoa. To create your own hyggekrog, start with your comfiest chair or a favorite corner of your sofa. Layer pillows and throws to make your nook the coziest spot in your home, position it by a window or add a warm lamp for soft lighting, and add a side table for the perfect spot to put your favorite cup of tea.

6. Highlight warm elements

Let’s be honest: It doesn’t get much cozier than lighting a fire when the weather is cold. In fact, a living space focused around a fireplace may just be the ultimate sanctuary. To bring this into your home for year-round hygge, make the hearth the focal point in the room (rather than the TV, for example). A room built around a fireplace will help create intimacy and warmth, even when the fireplace isn’t lit. If you don’t actually have a fireplace in your home (because same), try clustering candles as a focal point, add warm lamps around the room, or have ample blankets and pillows draped on every piece of furniture. No matter what works for you and your space, make warm elements the focal point of each room.

7. Try a warm, neutral color palette

By now, you probably get that hygge is all about warmth and making your home feel inviting and comforting instead of cool. Basically, it’s the antithesis of sleek and modern. Besides actual warm elements like candles and lighting, color scheme has a major effect on how hyggelig a home feels. Cool tones or bright pops of color aren’t necessarily a no-go (the point is to evoke the feeling of home, however that feels to you), but warm neutrals like creams and beiges tend to feel more relaxing and inviting than cool gray or dark black and feel less cluttered than bright colors. If you stan a dark wall color or live for your bright sofa, you don’t have to transform your entire decor style to add hygge into your home. Simply add a few throw pillows, blankets, art work, decor pieces, or other accents in neutral colors.

8. Layer in textures

You guessed it: Texture matters too. The right tactiles are so important when it comes to hygge interiors, since the lifestyle is all about how you emotionally feel, which is represented by what you physically feel with your home decor. Aim for a variety of textures (think: soft sherpa, warm knit, and rough wood) for a comforting and balanced feel in every room. Since it’s all about how you feel rather than just how it looks, think about what textures would feel best for you and add in a variety of elements: picture running your fingers run across a wood table, being wrapped in a linen blanket, or stepping across a fur rug.

9. Incorporate vintage touches

Flea market shoppers and antique hoarders, rejoice! Ancestry and nostalgia are both important parts of the hygge life, which means vintage pieces or personal touches are crucial to making a home feel as warm and welcoming as possible. In fact, household objects, furniture, and decor should be more than just things that look nice and show off our style; they should also hold emotional value or tell a story that is personal to the owner. Incorporate vintage touches that have a history, like your grandmother’s favorite teapot, a landscape portrait your mom bought when she was in college, or even just your favorite photos of family members when they were younger. Also, think of decor shopping in terms of making memories: fill your home with items you bought from travels or recover a vintage chair you found at a flea market with your best friend.

10. Remember that simplicity is key

Lastly, remember that the hygge life is about ease, contentment, and comfort. If there’s a cluttered corner or a piece of furniture you don’t really love, you probably aren’t as content as possible when you’re enjoying your home. Only fill your space with the things that really make you happy and donate whatever doesn’t to create more simplicity. Hygge is not about extravagance but about taking pleasure in the sheer simplicity of your immediate surroundings. In other words, actually use your space for living rather than as storage for your stuff.

Why Everyone Should Watch ‘Only Murders in the Building’

Source: Hulu

Crime podcasts, YouTube channels, TV shows—you name it, and I’m there. So when the Hulu original true crime and comedy hybrid Only Murders in the Building dropped, I was intrigued. An avid Nancy Drew fan (and self-proclaimed lock picker) in my childhood, I knew this show would be right up my alley. And once I saw that Selena Gomez would grace me with her presence in every single episode of the series? Well, now I had to watch.

The murder mystery TV show stars Gomez along with renowned actors Steve Martin and Martin Short as an unlikely trio of friends in the exclusive Upper West Side Arconia Building as they solve the murder of fellow resident Tim Kono. As any true crime junkies would, the three realize the police are wrong in their ruling of Kono’s death as a suicide. With a passion for uncovering the truth and searching through a dead neighbor’s apartment, they take the mystery into their own hands. Documenting their progress, the three create a podcast called, you guessed it, Only Murders in the Building. While each member of the group possesses a deep love for true crime, their conflicting personalities and ability to turn any situation into a hilarious exchange create a thrilling yet quirky adventure. It’s heartfelt, it’s funny, and there’s a dash of danger—a perfect recipe for a true-crime show.

Though the anticipation of having to wait for new episodes every week week nearly killed me, I made it to the final episode and just need to talk about all of the best moments from the series (and the plot twists!). Here are the best moments and takeaways from Only Murders in the Building—and don’t worry, you won’t find major spoilers here!

1. Selena Gomez Can Do No Wrong, Ever

While this may have been a well-established fact if you ever paid any attention to anything Ms. Gomez has worked on, from her own makeup line to her most recent acting gigs, it’s clear that Selena can truly own any role she gets. In Only Murders in the Building, Gomez plays Mabel, a mysterious yet sassy and wicked-smart city girl whose affinity for solving mysteries makes her all the more drawn to the case of Tim Kono. Describing sneaking into a dead guy’s apartment and going through his stuff as “an afternoon,” Mabel doesn’t shy away from danger. I mean, our first introduction to Mabel is seeing her relish in a dream of stabbing a man to death with her knitting needle, so we know we’re in for a powerhouse of a woman.

While Gomez does an impeccable job of playing the witty, independent woman we all want to be, she also flawlessly shows a more vulnerable side to Mabel. Let’s take, for example, Mabel’s relationship with Charles (Steve Martin) and Oliver (Martin Short), two “olds” who make up a caring yet, at times, awkward remainder of the mystery-solving trio. When Charles commits a 21st-century faux pas of signing his name at the end of a text to Mabel, we see our first instance of a smile from the tough-as-nails New Yorker Gomez portrays. I even found myself chuckling as she responded, “FYI, you don’t need to sign your name.”

2. We Need More Parodies of Crime Shows

Regarding the story itself, Only Murders in the Building is a show I never knew I needed in my true crime love life, but wow was I happy Hulu brought us together. Even in the first episode, the lively theme song is our first clue in seeing that this isn’t going to be the dark, serious murder mystery we’ve grown accustomed to. From our introduction to Charles, a Hollywood has-been, and Oliver, an absolute theater-geek looking to make a quick buck anywhere he can, we can see that though the show depicts a grisly murder, it doesn’t take itself too seriously. And as a viewer with a love for the kind of humor this comedy-meets-drama supplied on the regular, I was happy to sit back and laugh.

On the surface, Only Muders in the Building appears to be a crime drama. If you look past the clever dialogue and utterly absurd situations each character finds themselves in, it is about solving a murder. But, with a deeper look, we see that the show is genius in that it actually satirizes other murder mysteries. Completely self-aware of 2021’s influencer culture, our characters don’t want to simply solve a mystery, they want to create an entire podcast centered around the death of a neighbor—and, of course, get rich while doing it. With references to murder mystery tropes like following a cab around a city to a plethora of old-school Hardy Boys references, this gives us a refreshing take on the classic crime drama genre.

3. You Don’t Have to Have Everything Figured Out, No Matter Where You Are in Life

This show was more than I expected in its perfect blend of comedy and crime, but what I really didn’t expect was the show’s depiction of Charles and Oliver. While Charles is an ex-actor of a somewhat forgotten TV series, Brazzos, Oliver hasn’t had much luck in his theater career despite seemingly giving it his all. Both men clearly want more out of their lives, and, as unconventional as it seems, solving a murder together was just what they needed to finally find a larger purpose.

Only Murders in the Building makes a bold choice to focus on the personal growth and, as I have dubbed, a second coming of age story of two characters you would think would have everything figured out by now. Instead of giving us the worn-out narrative of the ambitious 20-something-year-old trying to make it big in their career, we see Charles and Oliver struggle with decision-making in their family life and financial situations. Charles grows from a socially anxious loner to the level-headed, sure-of-himself leader of a podcast. Who would have thought a retired actor and Oliver, a theater director who hasn’t had work in ages, were the perfect recipe to run such a successful podcast? If anything, Charles and Oliver show us that you don’t need to have everything figured out early in life; you just have to roll with the punches and follow your passion.

4. Sting Really Should Have Done More Acting

The cast of Only Murders in the Building is star-studded, with the likes of Tina Fey and Jane Lynch accompanying the already impressive main roles. However, just four episodes in, in an episode appropriately titled, “The Sting,” we see former frontman of the Police, Sting, appear as one of the murder-fearing residents of the Arconia. The “Every Breath You Take” singer stars as himself—because seriously, who else could Sting play?—and for a brief minute, he even becomes a suspect of the murder.

Each scene with Sting made me laugh, from the moment our mystery-solving trio brought him a turkey dinner to Sting’s several diva-esque outbursts. We’re able to join Charles and Oliver in their starstruck excitement since, they too, make a big deal out of the fact that the music icon is in the show.

Though the show didn’t bless us with his presence in every single episode (sigh), we do learn that he can hold his own as an actor. I mean, seeing that he depicted a slightly more aggressive and cocky version of himself, I was considering if Sting could really be a cold-blooded killer. Bottom line: I fully expect Sting to do more acting in the future because it’s clear that he has the acting chops.

5. You Really Don’t Know Your Neighbors

With a title containing the word “murder,” you already know that the show is going to give twists and turns and a healthy dose of betrayal. And let me tell you, we get all that and more. Throughout the series, the show slowly introduces us to every Arconia resident—AKA a possible killer—and their backstories and alibis as Oliver, Charles, and Mabel come closer to revealing the murderer. At first, each character appears normal and even bland, but we come to find out what makes each person tick, what they may have noticed the night of the murder, and in the case of Howard, the father of a recently deceased cat, what’s in their freezer.

While I’m all for seeing the residents of the Arconia bicker, banter, or yell at each other—pure entertainment—I began to wonder how well I really know my own neighbors. Only Murders in the Building goes to show that not everyone appears as they seem. While I’m not a proponent of running around thinking my neighbors are murderers (my life is far too boring for that sort of thing), the true crime genre makes a point of saying you never know that much about a person from mundane elevator small talk or passing each other on the street.

Truly, we never know what someone else is going through, so shouldn’t we make it a point to get to know our neighbors a little better? Without a trio of strangers talking to each other, we never would have gotten our favorite podcasting group. So maybe take this as a sign to strike up a conversation with your neighbor—just hope that they don’t have a cat in their freezer.

6. Don’t Listen to the (Podcast) Haters

A little cliche in and of itself, if the characters of Only Murders in the Building can teach you anything, it’s to focus on what you know is best for you because you know yourself best. If Mabel would have listened to her mom and stayed away from the investigation, she wouldn’t have solved the murder. If Oliver would have listened to literally anyone around him, he wouldn’t have initiated a podcast that became one of New York’s favorites. Sure, facing danger like this may not be the best advice to listen to, but there’s some truth in that you can’t listen to what everyone else says you should do. Sometimes, you have to go off the beaten path.

Oliver, especially in his own eccentric way, can be a handful and sometimes completely cringey. I mean, trying to sell your murder podcast merch at a resident meeting about said murder? Not the move. But the way he marches to the beat of his own drum, fearlessly making a scene but getting stuff done everywhere he goes, basically made him my role model. It was his own idea to look into the case when the police ruled Tim Kono’s death to be a suicide, and it turns out, he, along with Charles and Mabel, were right in doing their own investigation.

Oliver, while unconventional, is a reminder that in all you do, going your own way—whether it’s to create your own podcast, start your own theater production, or maybe even cook a turkey for a dinner party with Sting—can be just what you need.

7. Bonus: Trust Your Gut Feeling

Without giving any *major* spoilers away, the last episode of the series comes with a huge plot twist. Though our favorite trio has taken down Tim Kono’s killer, we still see Mabel feel a little uneasy as everyone around her celebrates a closed case. Over a glass of champagne, she asks, “Doesn’t it feel like there’s still a few loose ends?” That’s when I knew in my gut that something wasn’t right. Of course, the finale of the episode reveals a bloody truth and we know Mabel was right in trusting her own intuition and keeping her guard up, even as Charles and Oliver relaxed.

And what can us mystery fanatics learn from this? Whether you’re searching for a killer or wondering if you kept your garage door open, trust your gut feeling. You’ll thank me—and Mabel—later.

Final Thoughts

Only Murders in the Building is what I would call a joyous yet dark misadventure of what has to be the most lovable trio of amateur sleuths. While at heart the show is a story of a murder and an unpredictable mission to find a killer, there’s so much more than that. Mabel is tough as nails and totally an inspiration to me (and my closet), Charles shows me that letting go and taking a breather are necessary, and Oliver is a reminder to not care about what other people think.

Whether you watched the series along with me or needed a reason to start it, you’ll definitely want to solve the mystery of what happens in season two. Hulu confirmed Only Murders in the Building for another season, and while it may be wrong, I can’t wait for more murders and misadventures at the Arconia. So, while we wait, pick up a Hardy Boys book, grab your knitting needle, and pay attention to your neighbors—you might even find your own mystery to solve.

Crayon Case’s 18-Pan Blush Binder Has Every Shade You Could Ever Need

After years of believing blush didn't show on darker skin tones, I finally discovered the magic of dusting hot pink, orange, and berry pigments onto my cheeks and temples. These days, it's rare for me to not use blush whenever I'm beating my face — and the Crayon Case Blush Binder recently expanded my selection of pigments to dip into.

What first drew me to this handy set are its 18 (18!) high-intensity powder blushes in reds, pinks, tans, peaches, and plums — all in one place. They are formulated to flatter a wide range of skin tones, including but not limited to my brown skin.

What also motivated me to buy the Blush Binder with my own paycheck was the sheer size of each pan. Each blush sits in a square pan that's a little more than two square inches. I definitely don't see myself hitting the bottom of these pans anytime soon.

The 18 blushes are divided into three layers meant to resemble the pages of a binder. The moment the palette arrived, I flipped through them in awe. The mostly blue packaging is so cute. On the pages, you can find illustrated notes with cute quotes that say "Reminder to slay" and even a tiny game of M.A.S.H that took me back to elementary school. (I may or may not have been tempted to play it right then and there.)

After getting my Blush Binder in the mail, I started doing my makeup right away, leaving my blush as one of the last steps as usual. (New York City-based makeup artist Tommy once shared this tip with me. He says leaving blush for last is best for judging how much your look needs.)

I swirled the big and fluffy E.L.F. Flawless Face Brush into one of the pink blushes, which is unnamed like the other 17 pigments, from the first page. Then, I packed the pigment onto the apples of my cheeks and swept it up to my temples because I typically go for an intentionally dramatic flush. These blushes are very pigmented but buildable, so achieving my desired intensity was incredibly easy. I didn't have to constantly return to the pan. However, I didn't overdo it with the first swipe.

side by side of page three of the crayon case blush binder and swatches of the six shadesCourtesy of Gabi Thorne

I know just how intimidating the Blush Binder looks at first. If you're not sure where to start, Tommy recommends matching your blush to the undertone of the lipstick you have on. Just rub your lipstick onto the inside of your wrist to figure the latter out. "If I'm wearing an intense wine-colored lip that blends out to fuchsia, I'd pair it with a magenta blush," he explains. You can also simply place the palette next to your face while looking into a mirror and see which shades coordinate best with the rest of your makeup, Tommy adds.

So far, I've only truly worked with about six of the 18 shades, mainly the reds and pinks, but I already have looks in mind for the remaining 12. I plan on pairing the burgundy and mocha hues from the second page with a green smoky eye. There's even an autumnal orange hue that I'm dying to pair with eye shadow and lipstick in a similar color or a matte burgundy lid instead. I haven't made plans for the baby pink or tan hues just yet, but I have a feeling they'll look good with anything.
